Today, Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Paul D. Eaton endorsed Representative Gael Tarleton (D-Seattle) for Secretary of State. Major General Eaton served more than 30 years in the United States Army, including combat and post-combat assignments in Iraq, Bosnia and Somalia. As a major general he was assigned to Iraq from 2003 to 2004 as Commanding General of the Coalition Military Assistance Training Team. During the 2008 campaign season, he advised candidates for both congressional and presidential campaigns. Currently, he serves as Senior Advisor to VoteVets and on the board of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft.
“This past week, I have been horrified to see military leaders stand by as President Trump forcibly dispersed peaceful protestors. These egregious actions are part of an ongoing campaign by Republicans to silence public opinion, undermine voting rights, and erode public confidence in the legitimacy of our election results. Washington state needs a new leader who is prepared to defend our democracy against all threats, foreign and domestic.” said Maj. Gen. Eaton.
“Gael Tarleton is clearly Washington’s best choice for Secretary of State. Gael has defended our nation for thirty years as a national security expert and has advanced voting rights at every opportunity as a legislator. She is the Secretary of State that Washington deserves.”
This is the first time that Major General Eaton has endorsed a candidate for Washington Secretary of State.
State Rep. Gael Tarleton has over three decades of national security experience. A former senior defense intelligence analyst for the Pentagon, she was one of the only women to advise the Joint Chiefs of Staff on threats to our nation and the youngest person ever to receive the National Intelligence Medal of Achievement. As Research Advisor and Development Director at the University of Washington, Gael managed global partnerships and developed funding for disaster management, international trade, national security, and global health.
“I am deeply grateful for Major General Eaton’s endorsement. The events of the recent weeks have demonstrated how the job of the Secretary of State has changed,” said State Rep. Tarleton. “When Donald Trump attacks American protestors, he attacks democracy itself. Washington state needs a leader who will boldly defend every vote and every voter against Donald Trump’s attacks.”
Major General Eaton joins many other national security leaders who have endorsed Gael Tarleton, including the Truman National Security Project – Pacific Northwest Chapter; State Rep. John Lovick, U.S. Coast Guard veteran; and community leader Mark Solomon, U.S. Air Force veteran.
“We’re thrilled that Maj. Gen. Eaton has joined us in endorsing Rep. Tarleton,” said Moh Kilani, Director of the Truman National Security Project – Pacific Northwest Chapter. “At a time when our democratic institutions are under attack at home and abroad, it is critical that we elect leaders who are prepared for this challenge. Gael brings a wealth of experience from her work in national security and state policy, and she is the only candidate prepared to lead Washington in the face of these new threats.”
